For the Fire Tongs Punch (or “Feuerzangenbowle” in German), rinse the orange and the lemon with hot water. Cut the orange in half: juice one half and cut the other half into slices. Zest then juice the lemon and pour all juice into a saucepan or pot. Add the red wine and spices to the pot, and heat slowly, making sure it does not start to boil. Remove the pot from the heat and place it on a heat source (a réchaud, small camping stove, or from a Fondue set)
Place the sugar cube into a metal holder (“Feuerzange” in German), soak the cube with rum and light it. Place some of the rum in a ladle, carefully light it, then pour the burning rum over the sugar cube. Add the rest of the rum in the ladle and repeat.
While waiting for the sugar cube to melt entirely, add the orange or lemon slices. Stir well before serving, then transfer to a tumbler, like the RIEDEL Tumbler Collection Shadows glass.
To serve the cocktail in an eye-catching way, use one small sugar cube for each glass. Let the sugar cube soak for a few seconds in the rum, then place it on each glass and light it.
