THE EXTREME RESTAURANT GLASS(May 2005)

Running a restaurant has been compared to an extreme sport: It is an extremely competitive, extremely demanding profession and the customer expects an extremely enjoyable experience. Every detail is important - from the quality of the fish, the feel of the linen, to the type of wine glass selected. Riedel is pleased to introduce Extreme Restaurant, for the discerning restaurant, who goes to any length to create a singular sensation for its guests.

The Extreme Restaurant glass, whose forms are fundamentally different from all other glasses on the market, is the newest addition to the Riedel Restaurant series. This shape was first developed in 2000 by Georg Riedel. Extreme glasses are named for their extreme contours and have diamond-shaped bowls that angle out dramatically before narrowing at the top. "More and more, people are enjoying new world wines that are very fruit driven in style," says Georg Riedel. "The exceptionally wide evaporation surface of Extreme Restaurant intensifies and enhances silkiness in the mouth of New World wines, balancing the intensity and quality of their flavors."

The Riedel Extreme Restaurant Series takes the same fine quality bowl and adds a slightly thicker stem to withstand the wear and tear of a busy restaurant. "A restaurant wine glass sees as much usage in a week, as a glass used at home sees in a year," said Georg Riedel 10th generation Austrian glassmaker and Extreme series creator. "Restaurants want to show the customer they care about the wine experience by using Riedel, and the Riedel Restaurant line allows them to offer non-lead stemware that showcases the wine in its finest form, yet has greater durability. There is no reason for a fine restaurant to use a wine glass that defiles rather than enhances the wine experience."

The Extreme Restaurant glass comes in 4 wine glass shapes corresponding to the most popular varietals: Cabernet Sauvignon (#454/0), Pinot Noir (#454/7), Sauvignon Blanc/Riesling/Old Vine Zinfandel (#454/5), Chardonnay (#454/97) and a Martini glass (454/17). These new glasses will arrive in the U.S. market in April and are only available to restaurants through select wine distributors.
